Top ten Arsenal shirts from the 1980s and 90s

Ian Wright

Arsenal's return to Adidas for the 2019-20 season saw the creation of the best selling Arsenal replica shirts for years, partly thanks to them taking inspiration from classic Adidas kits from the 1980s and 90s. The latest away offering for 2020-21 has certainly provoked a strong response!

If the latest shirts aren't your thing, you might enjoy this celebration of some of the best Arsenal shirts of the 1980s and 90s.

1. Away 1988 to 1991

Possibly the most iconic Arsenal shirt of all time (with all due respect to the 1971 and 1979 away shirts), thanks to the events of 26 May 1989 at Anfield.

Replica available from Arsenal Direct or you can try to find an original on ebay.

2. Home 1982 to 1984

Many prefer the white-collared late 70s/early 80s home shirt - and I can see why. However it's slightly before my time, and my affections lie with the 1982 to 1984 shirt in which I saw my first heroes play - Kenny Sansom, Paul Davis and Tony Woodcock.

3. Away 1991 to 1993

The famous 'bruised banana' shirt was the subject of ridicule when it was released, but it has since become regarded as something of a design classic. The 2019-20 away shirt took it's inspiration from the 1991-93 vintage.

The shirt is hard to get hold of, but Arsenal stock a wide range of bruised banana memorabilia.

4. Home 1992 to 1994

Arsenal won the League Cup, FA Cup and European Cup Winners Cup in this shirt, although in their famous victory in Copenhagen in 1994, they wore this shirt without the JVC logo.

5. Home: 1988 to 1990

While the title was clinched in the away kit, this shirt still evokes wonderful memories of Arsenal's 1988-89 title winning season.

6. Home: 1990 to 1992

Arsenal's 1990-91 title winning shirt, during which they were beaten only once in the league all season.

Replica available from Arsenal Direct or try ebay.

7. Away: 1997 to 1999

A bit of a design classic, it also helps that Arsenal wore this shirt in a number of convincing wins on their way to winning the 1997-98 double, including a 1-0 win at Old Trafford. When I think of this shirt, I think of Dennis Bergkamp at his magnificent best.

It's hard to get hold of a replica of this shirt, but Arsenal Direct sell a polo shirt with the same design.

8. Away 1982 to 1983

Arsenal's green away kit lasted just one year, was hardly worn and didn't go down too well at the time, but it is fondly remembered by many fans.

9. Home: 1996 to 1998

This was the second home kit made by Nike. The previous season's kit gets kudos for the stripey socks. However, this one makes the top ten thanks to being worn in Arsene Wenger's first double-winning season.

10. Home: 1999 to 2000

The end of almost twenty years of JVC sponsorship saw Arsenal's home shirt emblazoned with Dreamcast. The yellow away shirt featured the Sega logo.
